President's Report:
Hello Current and Future LMLA Members:

Our 2007-2008 program year promises to be one of our best yet. With a new Board structure in place and filled by an energized and driven team as well as an increase in our chapter budget, we will be “kicking it up a notch” to improve our chapter infrastructure, enhance program offerings, and expanding our presence throughout the work locations of Lockheed Martin in Northern Virginia.

The Northern Virginia Chapter was established in February of 2004 and has been growing steadily ever since. With over 165 members in more than nine work locations, we have to think outside the box when it comes to program design, member communications, and resource sharing to meet the developmental needs of our diverse members. As you can see on our new chapter website, we have a full year of new programs planned.

In addition, the Southeast Regional National Management Association (NMA) Conference will held in Old Towne Alexandria, Virginia in May of 2008. This event will be hosted by Washington Metropolitan Area (WMA) LMLA Chapters, with our chapter taking a lead role. We will help shape the conference content and provide volunteers to appropriately host our fellow LMLA members. With all of the leadership development resources and potential speakers in the D.C. area, this conference promises to be unlike any other.

Our chapter is always looking for new members and for current member to step up and develop their leadership skills by taking on a lead role in a chapter or at a chapter event. Please contact a Board member if you are interested in getting involved.

I am excited to be leading our chapter for another program year. With our new Board in place and moving forward at full steam, this will be an exciting year of growth for our chapter. I hope to see each of you at a future chapter event.

Sincerely,

Challie Dunn  SPHR, CCP, GRP, CM

Leadership Book Review:
Integrity
By Dr. Henry Cloud
Review by Brian M Crosby

Coming from a background working with Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and individuals leaders, Dr. Cloud writes about Integrity—the courage to meet the demands of reality—and how six qualities define the integrity of your character. Dr. Cloud explains the six character dimensions using real life examples, such as Tiger Woods, and his own life experiences.   The six character traits are the following:
·        Establish Trust
·        Oriented toward truth
·        Getting Results
·        Embracing the negative
·        Oriented toward increase
·        Oriented toward transcendence
The way Dr. Cloud explains each of these character traits and gives examples of how to model them in your own life is concise and to the point; which makes for a wonderful read and desktop companion. After reading this book I found myself using his examples in everyday life to model my character and adjust my outlook.
I would recommend this book to anyone—not just inspired leaders—that want a different take on integrity. This book also gives transparent view of character and what it truly means to have the courage to meet the demands of reality.  Brian Crosby

  • Creation of an interactive and enhanced chapter website on the world wide web This need arose from a majority of our members with customer worksite connectivity challenges. Now they no longer have to log onto the Lockheed Martin network to access chapter information.
    • Most importantly, this new site;
      •  establishes a paperless process for new member enrollment, program announcements, and chapter administration
      • provides for redundancy of chapter tasks across Board positions to eliminate a single point of failure
      • is a professional, consistent, and informative resource for marketing our chapter
      • includes a six-month chapter program schedule with online registration feature
  • Establish defined communication lines within Northern Virginia Lockheed Martin programs
  •  Creation of chapter specific marketing materials and brochures
  • Expansion of program offerings beyond monthly meetings to include networking sessions and a seminar series
